I design crochet appliques for my Corsage Coats, but they can be used on throw pillows, fabric lampshades, bags, or framed and displayed. My interest in Botanical Art began when I found a wonderful book by Earnst Haeckle from the early 1900s called "Art in Nature." I've been creating realistic and asymmetrical organic designs with my crochet hook and yarn ever since!
This fairly easy crochet pattern for fern and fiddleheads is good for experienced beginners or intermediates. It's somewhat more symmetrical than others of my applique designs, and it's also quite flat. I recommend hand dyed, ombre, or long repeat color palettes for best results. The example shown was made with Hobbii Winterglow yarn for the greens, and a metallic sport weight gold yarn for the leaves.
The appliques can be arranged in a wide variety of ways, from the very symmetrical and formal, to the very wild and untamed. They can be sewn onto fabric or glued onto wood, plastic, and other surfaces.
